My Gr8-grandfather with his sons (one of them was my grandfather) came to Tanah Melayu in 1882 and set up a shop, the 1st 'Bombay Shop' in Johor Bahru. By 1896 they had a branch in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. In 1903 they had organised a 'SALE' to clear out their old stock, ironically it was the 1st shop in JB 2 av a 'SALE", Since then their reputaton and biissuness grew to unprecendented level and at their peak they had 7 shops in a row in Jalan Trus, Johor Bahru and 2 more branch in Muar and Segamat. Their success are well documented in Johore history and British has included their story in an English primary school book on the topic 'My Visit To A Bombay Shop'. I have the copy of that school book. Every good times have bad times, the WW2 was the downfall of their bussiness. The Japanese occupation has ruined the economy then. So from from 7 shops/3 branches, it came down to operating 1 shop in Johor Bahru. Well its already 5th generation upto my son. I hope we are here to stay 4ever. InshaAllah.. | Photos | Apr 23, 2011 |
